fable 5 is back: in your plan for a week, then metered
fable 5 is available again as of july 1. it’s included in your plan for the first week (up to 50% of your weekly usage limits through july 7), then it switches to metered usage credits. here’s the short version.
what’s live now
fable 5 is back july 1, globally, across claude.ai, the api, and anthropic’s coding cli, with the major cloud platforms re-enabling right behind. through july 7 it’s included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits on pro, max, team, and select enterprise plans. after july 7, it runs on metered usage credits.
how it left, and came back
on june 12, the us government ordered anthropic to suspend fable 5 and mythos 5 worldwide, citing national security. the reported trigger was a jailbreak that got the model to read a codebase and fix its software flaws. anthropic pushed back publicly, arguing that comparable capability already exists in other frontier models. every other model (opus, sonnet, haiku) stayed up.
for about three weeks, fable was gone at any price. on june 30 the department of commerce lifted the export controls, and anthropic said it worked with the government on safeguards on the way back, blocking the reported bypass in over 99% of cases by its own numbers. mythos 5 access continues to expand to more government-approved partners.
that’s the timeline: back july 1, included in-plan for a week, metered after.
